"Mélange" means mixture or blend, for which this series of paintings was aptly named.  In this contemporary abstract collection, B W Pryor attempts to share the wonder and excitement of melding variations of the same hue, to inspire compositions that evoke movement, energy, and . . . surprise!  Her heavy use of "impasto" (layering paint thickly) dominates each composition, creating an almost sculptural quality to each painting.  In addition, she developed her own technique for loading multiple paint colors simultaneously onto the blade of a putty knife (rather than a paint brush or palette knife) before applying it to canvas. This creates what she refers to paradoxically as "intentional surprise," for her carefully selected colors intermingle capriciously, impulsively, and unpredictably – and yet, together, they bring harmony to each composition, culminating in a pleasing, visual effect.
